That's typically not the case for older people who grew up during the Depression. Their holiday traditions were often simple, and without an abundance of food or presents. Several elders living at Norumbega Point and Sunrise Senior Living in Weston and Waterstone in Wellesley, as well as those participating in Wellesley Friendly Aid's Friendship Circle shared stories of their Depression-era childhood holiday traditions. Without a touch of remorse, virtually all the men and women recounted modest celebrations. In fact, most were quick to point out that they did not feel cheated out of lavish holidays. "Without TV to see how 'the other side' lived, we were unaware of another way and content with our own. Before World War II, we were thankful for any gifts, even pajamas, or a woolen skirt," explained a resident of Waterstone.
