come to know so well. Recently, I asked her to share personal lessons that have shaped her own life journey including those that came through her social, academic, and profes- sional networks, and those she's learned from the subjects profiled over her near-20- year film career. In short, I wanted to know what makes Mary continue to run — or row — often against the mainstream. To ground those lessons, she starts by hap- pily rattling off a list of her true heroes and teachers: Her mother; the mothers who seek to protect and nurture their children ("mother" being a recurring thematic motif in many of her films); the vulnerable children who find astounding inner resolve; and the champions of the children who have been cast in sup- porting roles as mentor. The heroes of her films represent a veritable rainbow of humanity composed of all manner of age, race, ethnicity, religion, gender, eco- nomic strata, social community, educational attainment, employment status, and "family." Within a hodgepodge of people and subject matters, Mary has found the common denom- inator that they — and thus we — are all alike in our dreams, set-backs, and strivings.
