it surprisingly human-scaled and walkable. Our B&B was located on a quiet street 10 minutes and a steep climb from the center of town. Our host distinguished himself by serving breakfast wearing a kilt. Speaking of which, you can have one custom-made — and the Scottish tourist rep I men- tioned earlier boasted of 21st-century styling. I still prefer trousers. You can't escape the Loch Ness monster in Inverness, either its likeness or posters for tours. The newspaper even had reports of a new sighting. We decided to forgo the daylong bus and boat tour — with at least one guaranteed sighting, that of the history-packed ruins of Urquhart Castle — for a stroll along the River Ness, which runs through the middle of town. The path is lined with benches, trees, and steep- roofed stone 19th-century buildings. One unexpected highlight was the glass and concrete Inverness Museum of Art and History. Its exhibitions range from the geo- logical and cultural to historic crafts and con- temporary art. Our next stop was the village of Pitlochry, a popular spa resort since the Victorian era that sits above the River Tummel in a setting that recalls the Berkshires. It even has its own arts center, the Pitlochry Festival Theatre, where a high-caliber repertory troupe performs a rotating series of popular plays and musicals. We wandered down to the river our first day, enjoying an al fresco lunch at the Port Na Craig Restaurant. If it weren't for the Scottish accents, we might have been at Inspector Morse's favorite pub in Oxford. We had an equally memorable lunch the next day at the Moulin Hotel, an inn that dates to 1695 and boasts its own brewery.
