When the five women returned to their hotel room, they insisted Sue Ann take the first shower. As Ginny explains, "Longtime friends can even antici- pate who needs the hot water most." Beyond warmth, Rat Packer Kathy explains how longstanding friends intuitively know what they need from one another, "Second to my family, my college friends have carried me through many of the most joy filled and cer- tainly the darkest moments of my life. For that, I am forever grateful." Philosophers, poets, and regular people alike all express how fortunate they are to have friends who have helped them become the people they have grown up to be. Longstanding friends have lived each other's struggles—the highs and lows of career paths, raising families, divorce, illness, and other personal challenges. They have devel- oped deep understanding, and even deeper acceptance, as well as an unshakable sense of commitment to one another. As one yet-to- be-discovered poet comments, "Old friends are friends you decide to keep—'friends of the heart' versus 'friends of the road.'" Friends of the Heart Unfortunately, the women biked in 48-degree windy, rainy weather—not the warm, sunny May climate they had envisioned. Their feet were soaked and hands numb and no one uttered a single word the last few miles of the journey. One of Ginny's friends, Sue Ann Sheehan, was "Remember that the most valuable antiques are dear old friends." — H . J a c k s o n B r o w n , J r.
