From a distance, the colorfully tattooed chef looks more like a member of a rock band than an approachable, affable culi- nary genius, and his Boston-based restau- rant reflects that same juxtaposition of bold countrified expression infused with a soft exotic elegance with offerings that are as varied and surprising as they are familiar and comforting. The effect is memorable both in the man himself and the overall dining experience. For those of you who haven't yet heard of Chef Matt, you should know that Jennings has in just a few short years become a signif- icant figure on the national culinary scene. Perhaps most notably, Jennings is now the recipient of four James Beard Award nominations for "Best Chef: Northeast"—quite an accomplishment for a man only in his 30s. Food & Wine named him one of the "40 Big Food Thinkers Under 40" in the food industry, and Esquire Magazine recently named his restaurant, Townsman, one of the best new restaurants in the country.
