the holiday season is upon us and what a wonderful time of year it is to celebrate friends, family, and our many blessings. One article in this issue, "Longtime Friends," illustrates the beauty and bene- fits of lasting friendships with personal accounts from individuals in our towns. The article includes a very special group of women near and dear to me: "The Rat Pack." Forty-three years ago, I had the privilege of meeting a dozen beautiful, bright, and very curious girls when we all found ourselves on the Boston College campus seeking education, adventure, and an active social life (but not in that order). By the end of our first year, we developed the threads of what was to become a woven wrap of deep-seated friendship. By the end of our junior year, The Rat Pack was firmly established. After graduation, we all went our separate ways—some of us stayed in Boston, and others began in careers in New York and Chicago. Dedicated to celebrating life as a group, we always gathered together at reunions, even when life got busy with growing families and career demands. This quote by Elizabeth Foley sums up how The Rat Pack has stayed together through the years: "The most beautiful discovery true friends make is that they can grow separately without growing apart." And that is what we have done. As we have grown older and become more grounded, and mature versions of our younger selves, our bonds have strengthened. We schedule longer and more elaborate getaways to spas and hotels, share cultural experiences, golf, relax, and, most importantly, remember past experiences with constant smiles and laughter. As dear friends we share a history, believe in one another, and trust one another as we share not only our successes, but our struggles with life's hurdles. We continue to rally around each other in shared joy, comfort, guidance, comedy, and dancing—always dancing. And for all of this I am most grateful. So I hope you enjoy our "Longtime Friends" article where you'll meet others who have had the joy of maintaining warm and loving friendships for many years. And I hope you'll find inspiration in the other articles in this issue that celebrate very special people, organizations, and events in our towns. You'll also get into the spirit of the season with some wonderful recipes for holiday entertaining in our Food and Wine department. And in Excursions, you'll discover a great spot for a fun and festive winter getaway. As you embrace the joys of the holiday season, I hope you have a chance to reconnect with old friends and make new ones as well.
