If it's not your own child, it's your child's friend, classmate, bus buddy, or cousin. Tree nut allergies — which at their worst can be life threatening — have far-reaching effects on children, their families, and the community at large. Just consider that the prevalence of nut allergies in children has risen over 400 percent in the last 15 years, and is the most common, fastest-growing allergy around. "When a child has a nut allergy, it completely changes the family's lifestyle," says Peter Najarian, whose 14-year-old daughter Abby has been affected by a nut allergy since she was three years old. "It changes kids and families' lives meaningfully, in terms of always having to bring along separate snacks and an EpiPen® (epinephrine). For example, often at the end of team sports events, food is handed out, and we don't always know if it's safe." Tree nuts come in different varieties including walnuts, Brazil nuts, cashews, and almonds. While a canister of cashews is an obvious nonstarter for those affected by nut allergies, it's not always obvious that nuts can be found in other foods like cereals, crackers, cookies, energy bars, and frozen desserts.
