Bid, Buy, Bargain, or Sell may well be the largest antique fair in the country. Held three times a year in the towns along Route 20 just west of Sturbridge, it draws over 5,000 dealers and a quarter of a million attendees. If you've never been, consider going at least once. But be forewarned: it tends to be pricey. On the other hand, simply strolling Brimfield's numberless rows, asking questions and haggling over an item or two is an education in itself. And local colleges and universities offer history or art courses that can transform a casual interest into true connoisseurship. But there are other ways just as rewarding to gather the knowledge you'll need to more fully appreciate the world of the past. Maine Antique Digest, a newspaper published for dealers and serious collectors, covers an auction scene so filled with variety and geographic diversity as to exhaust the most intrepid antiquarian. New England Antiques Journal is a quality publication with a distinctly regional flavor that also merits your attention, as does www.antiquing.com/ ma.htm, where you can find local auction news and dealer locations.
