last november, Massachusetts' voters passed a measure legalizing the use of recreational marijuana by adults 21 and older. The new law — passed by 54 percent of voters — allows adults to use marijuana at home and makes Massachusetts one of eight U.S. states to legalize its recre- ational use. Adults may possess up to one ounce of marijuana in public and up to 10 ounces of marijuana at home. Up to 12 marijuana plants may be grown per household. The trajectory of greater public acceptance of pot started in Massachusetts in 2008, when possession of small amounts of marijuana was decriminal- ized. That meant that getting caught with less than an ounce of pot was punishable by a civil fine of $100; there were no criminal charges. Medical marijuana was legalized in 2012. With the legal tide shifting, and public perception evolving, questions loom: How might this affect our kids? How do we talk to them about it? And what do we know about the effects of cannabis on the adolescent brain? This is Your Brain on Pot According to Dr. Staci Gruber, we know quite a bit about how pot affects the brain. Gruber is a neuroscientist and associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School who has spent the last two decades involved in marijuana-related research, studying the impact of recreational marijuana on cognitive performance, brain structure, and function. More recently, she has focused on the changes that result from exposure to marijuana at younger versus older ages.
