the relentless pursuit of Federal and State criminal investigations and lawsuits. Mary was there — with camera, mic, and questions — to bring to light the unfolding, sordid narrative. Investigative research, compelled by the real-life stories of underage teenage girls (and their equally brave and vocal mothers), revealed that the "pimping" of minors was a carefully hidden, but thriving, business on Backpage. Mary's films Ten9Eight and Underwater Dreams garnered similar attention and so- cial change telling the stories of inner-city teen entrepreneurs and undocumented high school immigrants, respectively. The individ- uals profiled in these films overcame consid- erable odds within business and academic settings, which offered them environments of challenge and encouragement. They also learned from many tireless mentors (teach- ers, business leaders, family members, social workers) who tapped into their potential and helped them fulfill their dreams. One might say that it all began with Daisy, Mary's daughter, for Mary's very first docu- mentary, A Hero for Daisy (1999), propelled Chris Ernst, Yale Varsity Crew member (and subsequent two-time Olympic rower), into the national spotlight as she and her team- mates struck a blow for actual equality within Title IX — effecting systemic change for women in academic settings — not only in New Haven, but around the country.
