named a finalist in the 2017 Service to America awards, one of only three other stations across the country to be recognized. Credibility First As the multi-platform, 24/7 news business gets more competitive by the day, so does the temptation to get the story out before any other organization. Yet, Bill and WCVB have always had a clear priority: "First be accurate, then be first." One clear example is fact check- ing. WCVB intentionally held back from showing video of a motionless body lying on the ground in Watertown, Massachusetts dur- ing the manhunt following the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. Other outlets showed the scene leaving that impression that it was Tamerlin Tsarnaev. WCVB never showed the individual until police identified the body. Asked about another challenge to the news industry — the resurgence of "fake news" — Bill responds by quoting Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan. "Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts." Bill points to the saving grace of words captured on video that prove or disprove claims. "Our job is to present the facts objectively, as close to the truth as possible, and let viewers come to their own conclusions," he explains. After Trump took office, Bill had the opportunity to get insights from ABC news veterans David Muir and Charles Gibson when they were in Boston on navigating news journalism in "the Trump era." 73 W e l l e s l e y W e s t o n M a g a z i n e | f a l l 2 0 1 7
