Boston University classmate who referred him for the job, "What makes you think I could ever get this job right out of college?" His friend replied, "Because they can't find anyone else and also because you remind them of the guy who just left the position." Bill prepared for his professional journey at Boston University. He graduated summa cum laude from the College of Communication in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science in broadcasting and film, and returned "home" to Boston in 1982 to work in sales at WCVB after working in both Plattsburgh and New York City. Since his first job in Boston, Bill has moved between Boston and Baltimore three times. His last post in Baltimore, from 1998 to 2005, was as president and general manager of WBAL-TV, the city's number one station and NBC affiliate. In 2005, Bill returned to WCVB as president and general manager. He has stayed put for 12 years and asserts that he has no intention of leaving his hometown. Under Bill's leadership, WCVB has received multiple national, regional, and local honors. The station was recently named 2017 Station of the Year by the national Gabriel Awards and was lauded as Best " First be accurate, then be first."
