S T E V E M A A S with a literary pub tour. Speaking of literary, in a small square just off the Royal Mile is Lady Stair's House. Built in 1622 and named for its early 18th century owner, Elizabeth, Dowager Countewss of Stair, the fairy-tale looking structure is now home to The Writers' Museum. It celebrates Scotland's big three: Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott, and Robert Lewis Stevenson. Its architecture is pretty much frozen in time, hence the spiral staircase I warned you about. We spent only two days in Edinburgh; it deserves two months. The best way to see the city is by strapping on extremely comfortable shoes and walking it. But for short-timers like us, an extensive system of dou- ble-decker buses — which share a pass system and leave near the railway station — offers a variety of narrated tours in and around the city that will help you fill your do-list for your next visit.
