think he's the best thriller protagonist out there because he's funny, but flawed, tough and humble. He's human. Are there any TV or movie adaptations of your books in the works? A lot of people are trying to put together either a movie or a TV series — a cable series would be my preference. But I've spent a lot of time in Hollywood. There are a lot of things that are being worked on that never happen. When we last met, you said you were planning another series focused on domestic threats. How is that coming along? I've signed a contract [with St. Martin's] for three books, one of which is the beginning of a series spinning off ex-Navy SEAL and CIA paramilitary operator Rob Tacoma [who first appeared in 2012's The Last Refuge.] He's in his late 20s and relatable to a new generation of potential readers. My younger female read- ers seem to like him. Who would the bad guys be? They're virtually unlimited. The biggest inter - nal threat we have is the Russian mafia, which is a quantum level more vicious than the Italian mob ever was. They're willing to kill just to get rid of a headache versus the Italian mob killing someone who has done some- thing to them.
