It wasn't that Usen lacked the proper qualifications. An accomplished professional, Usen had graduated, cum laude, from Georgetown Law, where she had served as senior editor of Georgetown's business law review. She spent seven years at a major New York law firm, special- izing in corporate and securities law, until she was hired away by her client, Merrill Lynch. As Vice President and Senior Counsel there, Usen was responsible for the firm's high-yield credit and trading groups. It wasn't a gap in Usen's skill set or experience that made it difficult to return to the workforce, it was the employment gap on her resume.
