since the dawn of recorded history, cultures and religions across the globe have revered the sun: from the Aztec god Nanahuatzin, the Berber god Magec, and the Inuit god Akycha to the Greco-Roman god Apollo. Profound respect for the sun's life-enhancing power endures today, including in Wellesley, although no longer through deities — instead, in the form of solar energy. Solar Panels Enhance Wellesley's Skyline Approximately 100 residential, business, school, and house-of-worship buildings in Wellesley are equipped with solar photovoltaic systems that harness the sun's energy and convert it to electrical energy for heating, cooling, and light. Included in that number is Temple Beth Elohim, Wellesley Friends Meeting (Quaker), Wellesley High School, Wellesley Municipal Light Plant (MLP), and Whole Foods Market. The first Wellesley residents to embrace solar energy, Moneer and Sara Azzam, installed solar panels at their home on Manor Avenue in 1997. Those panels are still generating electric- ity for the family today, 20 years later.
