If one prefers a more contemporary ski resort, there is Stratton, which is directly across from Bromley. Developed by Intrawest, the same group that runs international ski resorts Mont Tremblant and Whistler, Stratton is a larger mountain with a village at the base, offering every- thing from sushi to the newest Moncler jacket. S'mores are set out at all the fire pits around the village, ready to be enjoyed after the last run. At Stratton, a great alternative to the food courts at the base of the mountain is the small Sushi Bar in the village. While the space is tight and the stairs to second floor seating can be a challenge with ski boots, the coconut curry tomato soup and rice bowls make it worthwhile. For Nordic skiers, there is Wild Wings Ski Touring Center down the road from J.J. Hapgood in Peru, Vermont. A converted horse barn houses a ski rental center and warming hut. Pulk sleds are also available for rent, allowing those traveling with small children to partake in the outdoor fun, pulling their children behind them. (This can be a great option if an older child is taking a ski lesson at Bromley, and a younger one is not yet ready or willing to try a downhill lesson.) For those who are not interested in skiing or snow shoeing (which is available at Hildene and Stratton), there is still plenty to do. Taylor Farm, which dates from the early 1800s, provides sleigh rides across its 550 acres. The rides are 45 minutes long, and there is a fireside stop with views of the surrounding ski mountains. Taylor Farm is also the only Gouda producing farm in Vermont, having won many awards for their artisanal excursions "a village at the base" Stratton Village, located at the base of the mountain, offers restaurants and shopping P H O T O S C O U R T E S Y O F S T R A T T O N / H U B E R T S C H R I E B L 190 W e l l e s l e y W e s t o n M a g a z i n e | w i n t e r 2 0 1 6 / 2 0 1 7
