For others they're a stressful time of overscheduling. Of frantic shopping. Of endless rush- ing around. For most of us, though, they're a combination of all of the above. So when your friend, cousin, or in-law calls and asks you to whip up a festive homemade side dish to contribute to the annual Chanukah feast, Thanksgiving spread, or Christmas brunch, there's often that famil- iar moment of mild panic. (It usually materializes just after you realize you've answered with an emphatic, "Of course!") And in that moment you wonder: A: What on earth am I going to make that will be a definite slam-dunk with everyone there, and B: How much time will it take me to make it, and how am I going to fit that time onto my already-full calendar? Well, if it's any consolation, you're hardly the first person to find yourself in this situation. Plenty of talented amateur and home cooks in our community have mastered a favorite go- to family holiday side dish for just such occasions.
