Mackin began her creative life with a camera. A Worcester Art Museum class in black and white photography inspired her to study fine photography at Syracuse University, where she earned a BFA, and at the California College of the Arts, where she earned her MFA. "The click of the camera was so satisfying, as was the magic of developing my own film and prints," she said. Mackin brought a painter's touch to the images captured on camera. She would paint directly on photographs or add layers using digital techniques. She found creative work in San Francisco as a photo-based artist and digital imager. Eventually, though, she realized that she was spending more time fine-tuning images at the computer than she would have liked. Most importantly, "I felt that I was no longer learning and growing as an artist," she said. "I craved a more tactile relationship with my art- work and dreamt of dancing with large canvases and touching thick layers of paint." Yet that blank canvas was intimidating. 158 W e l l e s l e y W e s t o n M a g a z i n e | w i n t e r 2 0 1 6 / 2 0 1 7 artist profile "dancing with large canvases" B L O N D E T U L I P P H O T O G R A P H Y
