Winston Churchill once said, "We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give." And Booker T. Washington added to that notion with, "Those who are happiest are those who do the most for others." While the conventional wisdom that giving is more important than receiving has been passed down for generations, we've only more recently discovered that science supports this sentiment. Research has shown that when we do something nice for someone or help others, it stimulates the pleasure center of our brains the same way chocolate does. The net-net? Helping others can actually make you happier. And there's no better time to think about giving back than around the holidays. The season was founded on the belief that we should help others—especially those who are less fortunate. And the stories of characters like Ebenezer Scrooge and the Grinch only further prove that point.
