integrated into the entertainment space and were often elevated into showplaces. Even without additions or structural changes, almost every house on Sherburn Circle has been updated. The most striking and uni- versal change has been an opening up to the outdoors. Originally, the trees, rock walls, and brooks behind these houses, which had attracted homeowners to the area in the first place, were minimally visible from the inside of the houses. Picture windows both framed and cut off views. Then, along came technol- ogy that improved the insulating efficiency of windows—and homeowners doubled the width or height of existing windows and even punched out new ones altogether. The homes today are lighter, brighter, and bring the outside in. One original owner says of her expansive views: "This is my art work." Additionally, new building materials that were easier to clean and maintain became popular. Tile replaced linoleum, Corian or granite replaced Formica, and cupboards with drawers and divisions replaced ineffi- cient fixed-shelf cabinets. But, in other ways, the changes are much more individual. In many cases, the renovated homes appear so different from each other and from their original structure, it is hard to imagine they were once basically the same. On a drive-by, however, most of the changes are not immediately visible. Expansions are hidden from view: some purposefully, others coincidentally. 123 w i n t e r 2 0 1 6 / 2 0 1 7 | W e l l e s l e y W e s t o n M a g a z i n e
