Girl Power But as Cyndi Lauper put it so memorably, sometimes "girls just wanna have fun." And Girl Scouts allows its participants to do just that. "I like the fact it has no pre-qualifications," says Alison Barlow, a former Girl Scout who is a troop leader for daughters Julia and Katie, a first grader and third grader in Weston. "You're not there because you're good at sports or good at art, you are just there to be girls together—there's no 'skill-building' ." And girls can come as they are. "They don't need to be the prettiest or the smartest," says Bramson. "They can be whomever they want to be in Girl Scouts." Since most girls are new at the activities they are trying, there is lit- tle self-consciousness about sticking their necks out. "Because they have a safe space to work in, they try things they typically wouldn't try. They have a blast teaching each other and helping each other," says Rohall. At campouts, for instance, there is often is a steep learning curve and teamwork becomes essential to the success of the trip. "These girls cook, they plan their meals, they pack their stuff, they load and unload the car, they make the fires," says Patricia Thames.
