an interview with ming tsai communicator. The father of two boys, ages nine and eleven, Tsai and his wife, Polly, live in Needham, close enough to Blue Ginger that Tsai can come home and cook dinner for the kids, then go back to work. WellesleyWeston: What's the advantage of your Wellesley location? Are there local cus- tomers who have been coming since you opened? Ming Tsai: I want to say a huge thank you to this community. Since day one, Wellesley has welcomed Blue Ginger with open arms. People in Wellesley and Weston have contin- ued to patronize Blue Ginger, which is obvi- ously my bread and butter. If I didn't have this neighborhood, we wouldn't be here. It's the "Cheers" effect. The transients from New York and Chicago, they're great, but it's the locals who keep returning. It's the locals who make it. Some of our best friends are our customers. I've known them now for 13 years. Every night there are going to be two or three tables where people have been coming for 13 years. WW: You have already expanded Blue Ginger to include a bar and private din- ing rooms. Do you foresee a second restaurant? MT: Most of my friends on TV have ten to twenty restaurants. They're laughing to the bank. But I don't know if they're any happier. I get a serious offer once a week. Boston, 46 WellesleyWeston Magazine | summer 2012 PHO TO COURTESY OF WGBH / A NTHO NY TIEULI
