Dashing Decks "When there's a barbecue going on, if you're not on the deck, you're not part of the party. " – Tom Wilhelm | a Blade of Grass Room for a Crowd Think of the deck as an outdoor extension of the home; a space used almost exclusively for rest and relaxation. Before digging a single post hole, count your friends. Wilhelm says that when there's a barbecue going on, if you're not on the deck, you're not part of the party. Allow space for flow between furniture and hard to move objects like grills or benches. Make some sketches on paper, then mark off the footprint to get a feel for the finished product. If you have lawn furniture, drag it to the space the future deck will occupy for a more realistic idea. If you don't have deck furniture yet, remember that different styles take up varying amounts of space. Don't make the mistake of building for wrought iron and then buying Adirondack. Budget Building Marc Kaplan of Sanford Custom Design says, "More is not always bet- ter. Sometimes more is just more." When building on a budget, think in terms of simple squares and rectangles. Once you introduce curves, the price per square foot leaps. PHO TOS COURTESY OF MOLLIE JOHNSON INTERIORS, INC.
