journeys bon voyage trekking getaways excursions escapes travel near and far Art-A-Field An expedition into the special world of New England's fine art museums PETER GOLDEN writer on a grey, cold, Maine morning in late February the surf smashes against the headlands of Pout's Neck in Scarborough, just south of Portland. I have just driven up from Boston to see the studio of the great American painter of seascapes, Winslow Homer. The property, recently purchased by the Portland Museum of Art, is nearing the end of a multi-mil- lion dollar restoration. It will be open to the public on a limited basis beginning this summer. The day marked the end for me of a month-long odyssey. Naively, I had gone about trying to visit every fine art museum in New England. After not too many days on the road my ambi- tion fell victim to circumstance. While I was able to wedge visits to Salem, Hartford, and Manchester, along with this final pilgrimage to the coast of Maine into my schedule, I reached my limit in Portland. Work-a-day conflicts placed museums in Burlington, Vermont and even nearby North Andover beyond my reach. That evening, after meeting old friends at the Portland Museum of Art, my journey came to an end. But earlier in the day I had a special dispensation to enter a private, very special world. Pulling up beside a security code box at the end of Black Point Road, I carefully punch in a few numbers and watch as a formidable, ironbound gate rolls slowly open.
