lege applicants accurately and creatively pres- ent themselves in their personal statements. All grown up now, Carol has retained her youthful sparkle and enthusiasm for life, the very qualities that earned her the nickname, "Bubbles." When you read her poetry, see her perform, or consult with her on your own writing, it becomes clear that Carol has packed a lot of living into her years. It is evident in the way she understands and articulates a full range of human emotions and her gentle and masterful style of probing to get at the essence of a situation. The ease with which she accompanies others through the some- times arduous process of finding the arc of their story is accompanied by a quick, opti- mistic, and at times outrageous sense of humor, even in the midst of adversity, that says: "We'll get through this, we always have, and we'll find the gift it bears." What's the secret to her success? "I listen acutely, I feel the flow, and I listen for the snag, the loophole in the logic of the story," Carol explains. "I take that snag and turn it into questions, and if they can answer them, they have solved their problem; they have found their true material." Undertaking the creative process with a guide like Carol can build courage and facili- tate insight. "It's essential to choose a guide that you respect and trust, who has good judg- ment and is honest, who will tell you when your work is bad, and is creative enough to help you make it better," Carol explains. 151 summer 2012 | WellesleyWeston Magazine
