volunteering community service helping out doing our part good works contributions neighbor to neighbor philanthropy Venturing Out BETSY LAWSON writer online herptile sales is perhaps the most unusual business plan sub- mitted to date as part of Entrepreneurship 101, the flagship program of the Wellesley- based nonprofit Venturing Out. More typi- cal, according to the organization's executive director Laura Winig, are plans for landscap- ing, pet care, cosmetology, auto detailing, and commercial cleaning businesses. What they all have in common, however, is they are serv- ice-oriented, sole-proprietorships with low start-up costs. With the help of the volunteer instructor, Winig says the budding herpetologist (one who studies reptiles and amphibians) devised a thorough blueprint on how to turn a profit by raising, spawning, and shipping a rare breed of frog that is highly sought after among certain collectors and can fetch upwards of $600 per specimen. "It was well thought out; I was impressed," Winig says. All that remains before this cre- ative entrepreneur can launch his business? Getting out of jail. Indeed, what differentiates Entrepreneurship 101 from other adult education courses is that it is taught to inmates who are nearing their release date. The program relies on volunteer instructors — who are themselves entrepreneurs — to teach the 12-week course to a selected 130 Laura Winig and Larry Buckley outside the South Middlesex Correctional Center in Framingham, one of the Massachusetts sites offering entrepreneurship training for pre-release inmates.
