One such adopter was Wellesley resident Jean Schoenfeld, who adopted her first of two greyhounds at age 71, a few months after her husband passed away. "I loved every minute of my time with the dogs," recalls Schoenfeld. "They're great dogs. They're well trained and very affectionate. They don't pull on the leash, they walk beside you, and they get along very well with other dogs. I took them out three or four times a day in all kinds of weather and I met a lot of other dog people and had fun doing it. People used to call me the greyhound lady." The same could be said of Kathy Mahoney. The walls of her home are covered with pictures of the greyhounds that have come to live with her family and the floors are dotted with a variety of napping ani- mals. And she would not have it any other way. "The most rewarding thing is being able to love them and to give them a good life," says Kathy of her substantial work on behalf of greyhounds. But her hus- band sees her impact much more broadly. He describes Greyhound Friends as: "In the business of saving a very important breed and giv- ing these dogs the homes they've worked for all their lives...No dog works so hard to get a real home." 100 WellesleyWeston Magazine | summer 2012
