potatoes, potatoes, and more potatoes — some microwaved and others served cold, plus a good dose of water to wash them all down — served as the bare bones diet that 18-year-old Wellesley College first-year student "Astronaut Abby" Harrison and her compa- triots went on one day last fall. They sought to raise funds to send kids to Space Camp and boost Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education awareness. The popular book and movie The Martian, in which an astronaut gets stranded on the red planet and creates his own private Idaho, inspired this spuds-and- H2O regimen. In cahoots with her mom, Nicole, and other #PotatoChallenge supporters, Harrison raised more than $7,000 in one day through The Mars Generation, a nonprofit organization she launched in September to formalize her advocacy for NASA's journey to Mars — a trip that she would love to take herself. 68 W e l l e s l e y W e s t o n M a g a z i n e | s p r i n g 2 0 1 6 Starting Early Local teens get the business bug B O B B R O W N writer
