created a myth attributing Civil War hero Abner Doubleday with inventing the game that supposedly was first played on a field outside the town. Never mind the English bat-and-ball game, Rounders, that's been played since the 1500s, among others. The Clarks still own the museum that now welcomes some 315,000 people annually and drives the local economy. On the last week- end in July, when new Hall of Famers are inducted, the pro athletes and their families stay at the Otesaga (60 Lake Street). During our stay, children played an impromptu game of baseball on the lawn. There are numerous B&Bs nearby as well as the Otesaga's sibling, The Cooper Inn, but the resort is the plum place to stay. On the scenic lake's southern tip, a short walk from town, the hotel is popular for weddings and reunions, which can intrude on other guests. But that aside, it is grand. The hotel is open mid-April through Thanksgiving weekend; restaurants and spa are year-round. Amenities include the 18-hole Leatherstocking Golf Course, a heated outdoor pool, bike and canoe rentals, and tennis.
