But it's our scent bank that is more vivid and evokes more recollections. In March, when winter releases its icy hold, we venture outdoors into the sun- shine and detect the wonderful distinctive smell of the earth warming; then an elusive scent hits. What is it? What memories are brought to mind? Everything is unfurling, uncurling, and swelling all around us in the garden, and the range of fragrances from earthy to sweet to spicy just adds to the headiness of the spring season. The excitement and anticipation do not diminish, for this is an exhilarating time of year. Daffodils (or narcissi, if you prefer) are the icons of the spring garden lifting their trum- pets toward the sun to announce the arrival of spring and filling the air with a delicate scent.
