Dorn, who lives in Wellesley, was inspired to write the how-to workbook because of her own life experience as an attorney, wife, and mother of three. Dorn was finding the demands of her career skyrocketing just as her family seemed to be needing her at home more, not less. She made the conscious decision to "off-ramp" for a number of years. Thinking back as to how and why she made the decisions she did , Dorn said it came down to honoring what she valued. She recognized that it meant making some hard choices based on her personal priorities. Yes, she had a promising career that she enjoyed, but she also wanted the choice to put it on hold. When it came time to "pick it up again," however, Dorn recognized that the choice to stay home had changed her sense of what would be now fulfilling to her professionally. Rather than returning to her previous field as an attorney and professor of law, Dorn wanted to inte- grate her interest in and understanding about the complexities all parents face in melding the work aspects of their lives with their family responsibilities. She started a consulting practice and began doing the research for what would eventually become the On-Ramp workbook, published in 2015.
