to have this opportunity," says Christine. "He is happy to go every time. It is just wonderful." TOPSoccer wasn't the brainchild of the Recreation Department or any official town entity. It came about because of the empathy of one young man. Five years ago, when Darrien Tan was a freshman at Wellesley High School, he helped volunteer weekly at a TOPSoccer program in Norfolk. "Seeing the impact that the program had on these kids' lives drove me to create a program in Wellesley that was similar," he says. He described the power of the program to his closest friends and immediately they joined Tan in his quest to bring TOPSoccer to Wellesley. "I played so much soccer and had so much fun, and I met so many of my friends that way," he observes. "I felt so badly that some of these kids couldn't participate." He was also surprised that "a progressive town like Wellesley" didn't have such a program in place. To gauge interest, Tan and his friends fanned out to area schools to promote the program and to sign up their first athletes. The initial season was a six-week session in the spring of 2008. Ten athletes showed up that first day. It is now an affili- ated Wellesley United Soccer Club (WUSC) team with 20 athletes, three professional coaches, and between 20 and 25 volunteers, most from Wellesley Middle and High Schools. The sessions are offered in both fall and spring. 152 W e l l e s l e y W e s t o n M a g a z i n e | s p r i n g 2 0 1 6 A R I E L R O O S good works "one of the best, most impactful programs"
