involved in organized sports much earlier than they used to — as young as kindergarten — the field shortage problem has become more chal- lenging than ever. In addition, newer sports like lacrosse are growing in popularity and require more fields, and other sports, such as soccer, are extending beyond their traditional seasons. All this adds up to a growing need for green space. The Wellesley High School (WHS) track and field, one of the "usable" town fields, has been in disrepair for years. Built in 1938 as the school football field, the space is not wide enough for a regulation soccer, field hockey, or lacrosse games, because those games either weren't played back then or weren't popular. As a result, the current field's use is limited to practices and home football games. Additionally, the rudimentary sound system is very low quality and creates noise pollution for the neighbors. On top of that, the aging polyurethane track is in such disrepair that it's less than ideal to run on because of the divots. "The track is coming up in chunks so the track coach carries around an epoxy kit to fill in the holes," said one Wellesley resident. Dr. David Lussier, superintendent of Wellesley Public Schools and father of three, has similar concerns about the quality of the high school facility. "People see the conditions first-hand and understand that it's in desperate need of revitalization. We've had to close it down periodically for repairs, and given the lack of field space in town, it creates a domino effect." 120 Field of Dreams W e l l e s l e y W e s t o n M a g a z i n e | s p r i n g 2 0 1 6
