tion, she explained. The most they can afford is $850 per month (one-third of their gross income) while the affordable rate set by the state in Natick is $1,400 per month. There is simply not enough affordable housing and the problem has been growing steadily for decades. A major initiative FPM has been focusing on is to work directly with individual towns to increase the stock of afford- able housing either through new construction or housing vouchers. "When we educate children about the problem in schools, they often think of homeless peo- ple as being older adults in cities," Crossley said. "But it's right here in the suburbs, too." A favorite story often shared with new volunteers is about how a local family helped make a meal at the host congregation where they were regular members. After dinner, the children played and the adults talked. The son told his parents later that night that it was fun and he would be happy do it again. "But when will the people who are homeless show up?" he asked. "Homelessness is not an 'us/them' issue," Mongiardo said. "Barriers come down when we get involved and become part of the solution." 160 W e l l e s l e y W e s t o n M a g a z i n e | w i n t e r 2 0 1 5 / 2 0 1 6 Local Family Promise Metrowest Host Congregations n Christ Church, United Methodist n Hope Spirit Catholic Community n St. Andrew's Episcopal Church n Temple Beth Elohim n Unitarian Universalist Society of Wellesley Hills n Wellesley Hills Congregational Church n Wellesley Congregational (Village) Church good works "become part of the solution" top: Participants warm up before the 2015 "Walk Away Homelessness' walkathon; bottom: The Wellesley Bank Charitable Foundation team before the 2015 "Walk Away Homelessness" event P H O T O S B Y R I C H A R D W O O S T E R
