The lower lobby of the now-replaced library was lined with tables bearing bowls of Zarex punch (a sweet, syrupy alternative to alcohol, which is not allowed in town buildings), plates of treats baked by members of the Friends of the Library from their Ex Libris cookbook, and a display of books by Wellesley authors. The occasion that Sunday afternoon was the "Wellesley Authors' Reception," the library's special celebration to honor its 100th birthday. Nearly 90 hometown writers attended, including Brooks Fenno, who eagerly searched the display to see his new book, Helping Your Business Grow, of which he was so proud. But it wasn't there. A disappointed Fenno found Library Director Anne Reynolds and asked why his book wasn't included. "She said that with the budget cuts, they couldn't afford to buy my book, nor those of many Wellesley authors there that day," Fenno says. "I thought, well, I'm a business consultant, how am I going to find a solution for this problem?" By the time Fenno left the reception, he had already come up with an idea that would not only bring his book to his library, but would eventually provide $1.5 million to the Wellesley library. His brainstorm, which became the Wellesley Free Library Centennial Fund, will continue to benefit future generations, as its untouchable endowment fund cur- rently totals $4 million (disbursements are made only from income).
