Initiating the Conversation Few want to dwell on aging and its compli- cations, be it children or their parents. But the sooner the conversation begins, the bet- ter. Decisions made in a crisis are rarely the best ones. For starters, share your concerns. Children, particularly if they live far away, may have nightmares of Mom falling down the steps and waiting hours for help. Mom may fear that at the first stumble or sign of forgetful- ness, she'll be pressured to move out of the house and surrender her independence. It's possible to allay both those concerns. "If you have a parent who says I'm staying here. I don't care about this that or the other, find out why that's so important to them," Beckerman-Rodau says.
