A Drone Near You The small and lightweight drones in Wellesley and Weston so far appear to be used most often by hobbyists, though some business endeavors are underway as well. While the FAA technically doesn't allow for most commercial uses, the reality is that much experimentation is underway across the country while the government formulates rules and enforcement practices. Wellesley College's communications and public affairs department bought a DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ over the summer, initially to document the many changes taking place on campus under a renewal project expected to cost hundreds of millions of dollars by the time it is complete in 2025. Sinking $1,300 into a drone was a relatively minor investment in the scheme of things. Wellesley College Director of Design Soe Lin Post is a serious photographer, though a relative drone newbie. He was drawn to the drone out of his interest in providing new photographic perspectives via aerial shots, and has taught himself how to use it through a combination of trial and error and Internet videos. The Phantom is flown exclusively on the college campus, with the idea of using the photos and videos taken via its camera for external communications, such as in brochures. Future applications could involve tie-ins with the Davis Museum of art and for covering college events, but Post stresses that he has taken a measured approach from the start. I always take care to calibrate it, so that if I do lose contact with it, it is programmed to fly back to me." Soe Lin Post Wellesley College Director of Design A L E X S A L C E D O 1 / 1 2 3 R F .
