casualties aside, this gardener has managed to make an incredible amount of things flourish in a relatively compact space. With a front garden that receives full sunlight and a rear garden that is mostly shaded, this ch arming space is a wonderful example of an outdoor area that perfectly complements the character of the home that it surrounds. In the front garden day lilies, white lilac, azalea, and a stunning Star Magnolia tree welcome visitors to the cheerful Dutch Colonial house built in 1924 and have the added benefit of being able to stand up to the full heat of the summer. A Blushing Bride hydrangea, the gar- dener's favorite variety, and a Montauk daisy bush, which adds late blooming interest, preside near the driveway. In the rear garden, beds of hosta, holly bushes, Rhododendron, Viburnum, and evergreen trees border the property, while an American Dogwood tree stands watch at the edge of the yard and provides shade to a reading bench. "Gardening is a great hobby," says this gardener. "It's fun knowing your plants and knowing what they need. It's an extension of caring for everybody; you care for your property as well." 54 Labors of Love W e l l e s l e y W e s t o n M a g a z i n e | s p r i n g 2 0 1 5
