50 W e l l e s l e y W e s t o n M a g a z i n e | s p r i n g 2 0 1 5 Labors of Love Expansive grounds for a passionate gardener As a young girl, the gardener at a lovely home with substantial green space in the Dana Hall area remembers weeding by herself for hours. "I just always enjoyed gardening," she recalls. As an adult, she now has the unique privilege of pursuing her passion for gardening on two acres of gently sloped land in the heart of Wellesley, where she still does most of the work all by herself. The property was not always so expansive, but when some abutting land came up for sale, the gardener and her husband jumped on the opportunity to pur- chase an additional acre, not to build upon, but to nurture. Featuring design elements like a pergola-covered patio, in-ground pool, flat Alsatian stone walking paths, and many calm places for reflection, the grounds are influ- enced by Japanese design and, most impor- tantly, the aesthetic of the gardener herself. "I view every section of our yard like a dif- ferent room," says the gardener. "I don't leave anything alone. I walk through my space, look at it from all different angles, and think about what needs to be added where. It's trial and error." The result is a space that is both lush and manicured.
