some clubs start with a formal mission, an itemized agenda, and a board of directors. But others, like the Hills Garden Club of Wellesley, begin with a cup of coffee and a group of friends. The year was 1955 and seven women were learning to braid rugs when they started to talk about their mutual interest in gardening. As the Garden Club of Wellesley was already quite full, this group of women decided to start their own club dedi- cated to the act of gardening. They gathered again on a beautiful June day and got right to work. When the day's hostess left the group to make coffee, they elected her President. When the Wellesley Garden Club complained about their original name of the Wellesley Hills Garden Club, they switched the word order to the Hills Garden Club of Wellesley. When they decided they needed an objective, they adopted Clock Tower Park in Wellesley Hills Square as their special project.
