as inspiration for the skater's red carpet moment at the New England Regional Figure Skating Championship. Yumi translates each skater's vision into hand-drawn renderings of a unique masterpiece, highlighting important design features of the front and back of the costume. Once the client and coach approve the design, Yumi orders materials, carefully measures the skater's body, creates a custom pattern, and prepares the garment for the first fitting. That's the time Yumi checks for proper coverage and movement and plans for the quantity and placement of the finishing touches, which can include 2,000 or more crystals. Further fittings sometimes take place rink-side for last minute adjustments. Empowering physical performance and artistic expression The fit and function of Yumi Couture creations are equally important as their beauty. "For athletes to compete to the best of their abilities they can't worry about wardrobe malfunctions, be weighed down by heavy fabrics, or distracted by seams. Outfits must hold up when male skaters grab hold of their pair to launch them into the air," explains Yumi. Her aerodynamic designs stretch to support complex choreography that includes triple axels, Lutzs, Salchows, throws, and lifts. They move fluidly, accentuating the grace and strength of the athlete's body as he or she skims the ice. Many of Yumi's designs feature cutouts with a mosaic-like pattern of different materials. Taking a cue from her grandfather, she hand-dyes mesh fabrics to match athletes' skin tones, dipping them into different teas ranging from chai to chamomile. She places top- quality Swarovski crystals to create three-dimensional effects revered in the industry. In fact, Ice Network honored Yumi with "Best Dressed" awards for her sin- gles skater Christina Gao in 2013, and pairs skaters Gretchen Donlan/Andrew Speroff in 2011 and Jimmy Morgan/Alex Shaughnessy in 2013. In spring of 2016, Boston will host the ISU's World Figure Skating Championship at the TD Garden. Be sure to check out the competitors' outfits. Likely many of them will be sporting Yumi Couture designs as they step onto the ice to bare their souls and inspire the audience. artist profile "inspire the audience" Family benefits While Yumi's daughter Amy no longer competes as a skater, her mother's talent continues to provide payback. In high school, Amy and her friends flocked to her mom's collection of crystals so Yumi could embellish their cotillion and senior prom dresses. As the mother of three daughters and one son who all grew up in Wellesley, Yumi's tailoring skills will likely be in demand for years to come. 182 W e l l e s l e y W e s t o n M a g a z i n e | s p r i n g 2 0 1 5 Jessica Lin
