ing outfits for local skaters training with nationally renowned coaches Mark Mitchell and Peter Johansson at The Skating Club of Boston. Amy's skating outfit was not the first Yumi sewed. Growing up in Japan as a competitive gymnast with what she describes as a "nontra- ditional gymnast physique," Yumi altered off-the-rack leotards to fit more comfortably and to flatter her shape. Undoubtedly, her innate creativity and technical skills spring from her family's heritage in the textile business for traditional Japanese kimonos. While her father was an accountant who insisted that Yumi and her four siblings train as accountants, her grandfather dyed fabrics for custom-made kimonos, and comes from a long line of kimono dressmakers. Burgeoning demand International elite skaters Christina Gao, Yasmin Siraj, and Stephen Carriere, and the former pairs teams of Gretchen Donlan/Andrew Speroff and Marissa Castelli/Simon Shnapir all wore outfits designed and hand-sewn by Yumi as they competed for US Olympic team spots at the 2014 Prudential United States Figure Skating Championships held at the TD Garden in January 2014.
