was the early 1990s and few licensed medical doctors were talking about holistic health. "I decided right then and there that I was going," Miller recalls. "I had no idea what I was getting into. I had never been to a spa and was heavily invested in conventional medicine [she was on the board of Newton-Wellesley Hospital at the time], but I was willing to consider anything that might help our son." Miller was not disappointed. The light went on for her when she heard Dr. Mark Hyman lecture on the connection between diet and health. "Food is medicine, perhaps the most powerful drug on the planet with the power to cause or cure most diseases," Dr. Hyman explained. "It is more than just calories; it is information that controls every aspect of our biology and health." "Dr. Hyman described how our bodies are continually exposed to toxins from the foods we eat, the products that we use, our lifestyles, and our environment," Miller said. Although our bodies have fantastic innate detoxification systems, they can become overloaded. The result is a "toxic load," which can adversely affect every system in the human body and may lead to a range of diseases including cancer, Parkinson's, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and immune dysfunction syndrome.
