Her son was failing to thrive, unable to gain weight, and throwing up daily. They had been to several doctors to determine what was going on and what they could do to help him, but nothing was working. As luck would have it, a friend from Weston who "looked radiant" despite having had a baby at the same time as Miller, suggested that Miller spend a few days at a wellness-oriented resort in the Berkshires from which she had just returned. It had been a lovely few days of exercise classes, spa services, prepared meals, health lectures, and no newborns. When Miller heard the resort had physicians on staff with expertise in integrated medicine — they com- bined conventional medicine with complementary medicines like acupuncture, massage therapy, and nutrition to help people achieve optimal health — her interest was piqued.
