ities few parents would dare give their teens now. Shortly after arrival, everyone was issued a roll of 29 railroad tickets and a list of departure times for each train they had to take in the next two months. "I don't remember anyone ever missing a train," she says now, "but there were some close calls." Everyone had $1.00 a day to spend on food. "We had just come out of the Depression and were used to penny pinching," she explains. The Depression also had lingering effects on the rails and roads. Even 10 years after the crash of '29, there had been little money spent on either. For much of the outbound journey across Canada, they rode and slept in an outmoded coal-burning train. Their third class "colonist car", wrote Nancy, was "hot as ____ and five inches of soot a day. I stood on the platform with my head out the window and got it all full of soot. But at least it was cool." The cars, dating from 1909, had horsehair seats, which the hostellers pulled together to make lumpy beds. One end of the car had toilets, which emptied on the tracks. The other had a rudimentary kitchen with a two burner stove and a sink, enabling the group to stretch their meager food allowance. The roads could be just as decrepit. With only one percent of today's traffic, fewer roads had been built and many were unpaved or in poor repair. Nancy describes a particular road near Banff, part of a two-day, 90-mile side trip that she and ten others took on as a chal- lenge. On the first day, they biked higher and higher up to steep foothills.
