material, and met annually for "letter stuff- ing" evenings, where they signed and added notes to each of the hundreds of targeted letters. "We found that this approach worked wonderfully," says Wilkins. "We have a base of strong supporters who responded annu- ally. This amazing stream of ongoing dona- tions bears witness to what has been truly a remarkable grassroots effort by a solid group of committed citizens." For a quarter century Wilkins, chairman of Wilkins Investment Counsel, Inc., donated his investment acumen to manage the Fund's assets and under his careful stewardship the principal grew at a remarkable rate, provid- ing the base that will exist into the future. Babson is particularly proud of the Fund's extraordinary legacy as the first public-pri- vate partnership in Wellesley, and one of the first in the country. "The Centennial Fund set the stage for public-private partnerships when it started 30 years ago," she says. "We look around now and see how this approach has improved much of how the town works — where private fundraising and staffing have contributed significantly to Wellesley's public facilities and services." By 1997, the Fund's endowment had qui- etly crossed the million dollar mark, and its annual donations began to exceed $30,000.
