But walk down the quiet lane where Ahearn's home sits and you cannot distinguish it from its ancestral neighbors, a feat that makes Ahearn very happy indeed. Whether it's a village cottage or a multi-generational home over- looking the ocean, Ahearn designs second homes that are intimate in scale but highly attuned to use of space. He often forgoes formal dining and living rooms in favor of large entertaining spaces that can spill from indoor to outdoor. Bedrooms are smaller, but with private baths to accommodate guests. When possible, Ahearn will do deep pour basements to allow for casual spaces like a movie or game room. (And, in his own home, comfortable couches that can sleep the many guests of his children.) Because there's one important question that Ahearn always asks when designing a second home: "What can we do to make it more fun?" Starting With a Single Statement While Ahearn begins the design of his second homes with a story, archi- tect Michael Collins of South Natick often begins his with a single state- ment: a grandfather who wants a home where he can hear the screen door slam, a father of toddlers who wants a home where he can some- day be a grandfather.
