horse carrying empty boots reversed in the stirrups to signify the death of the commander. A veiled widow with her two fatherless children led the funeral march. When John F. Kennedy, Jr. (known to many at that time as Ò John-JohnÓ), who had turned three that very day, stepped forward at his motherÕs encouragement to salute the flag that draped his fatherÕs coffin, photographers caught the moment that came to be engraved in the hearts of those who watched. At the gravesite in Arlington National Cemetery, hundreds of blooms surrounded by a white picket fence succeeded in creating the feel of an intimate family plot, despite three million mourners passing by. The assassination inspired public eloquence from 100 heads of state. Even Nikita Khrushchev Ð so recently stared down by Kennedy in the naval blockade of Cuba Ð responded: ÒI am deeply grieved by the news of the tragic death of an outstanding statesman É I shall remember my personal meetings with President J. F. Kennedy as a person of broad outlook who realistically assessed the situation and tried to find ways for negotiated settlement É The Soviet government and people share the grief of the American people over this great loss and express the hope that the search for settling disputed questions É would be continued in the interests of peace, for the benefit of mankind.Ó ★ Nikita Khrushchev, Premier, Soviet Union ÒPresident Kennedy died as a soldier, under fire, for his duty and in the service of his country É I salute this great example and this great memory.Ó ÒThe loss É is incalculable.
