Coming Home Twenty-four hours a day over the course of five months, soldiers learn how to live in extremely dangerous and chaotic environments, to detach themselves from emotions other than anger, and to conduct missions that would be considered objectionable in civilian life in order to eliminate the threat to those they have been engaged to protect. Intense camaraderie, accountability, adrenaline, and sense of purpose provide insulation during combat, allowing soldiers to serve for extended periods of time, and, for some, across several deployments. But when soldiers leave the base and return to civilian life, they lose that insulation almost overnight. Although they are no longer on the battlefield, they often continue to experience the trauma of the battlefield, a condition known as PTS or Combat Operation Stress.
